Firearms

It is mandatory to obtain a firearm permit issued by the Greenland Police if an expedition intends to bring or import any firearm into the Northeast Greenland National Park. A separate firearm permit application must therefore be submitted directly to the Greenland Police. An expedition permit cannot be granted unless a valid firearm permit has been issued.

Expeditions operating within the National Park must carry at least one rifle with a minimum calibre of 30.06. If the expedition will split into multiple independent groups, each group must carry its own rifle meeting the same minimum caliber requirement and must be covered by a valid firearm permit.

A firearm permit from the Greenland Police is also required for the possession and use of signal/flare pistols.

In the rest of Greenland, there is no requirement to bring a firearm, however, all expedition teams are recommended to bring a firearm for self-defence in case of polar bear attacks.

For guidance regarding import and possession of firearms and firearm permits, please contact Greenland Police.

In Part 3 of the expedition application process — which must be submitted no later than 8 weeks prior to the expedition start date — you must either upload the final firearm permit or provide documentation showing that the firearm permit application has been submitted.

If the final firearm permit is not available at the time of submitting Part 3, the latest opportunity to upload the approved permit is in Part 4. The final permit must be submitted in Part 4 no later than 7 working days before the expedition start date.
