Fuel depots – area allotments and environmental terms and conditions

If you plan to use fuel depots, relevant permits must be included in your application:

  • Environmental conditions will be issued for handling, storing and transporting the fuel. These conditions will be included in the expedition permit. The expedition permit will be dependent on a valid, temporary area allotment.
  • Temporary area allotment permits in the National Park in Northeast Greenland must be obtained from the Department of Land Management at oed@nanoq.gl
  • Temporary area allotment permits for fuel depots outside the national park must be obtained from the relevant municipality.

The project owner who has obtained the expedition (and National Park) permit is also responsible for fuel depots and should be the one obtaining the area allotments for the fuel depots, i.e. with the project owner’s details on the application. The expedition permit number should be referenced in the area allotments. Please note that environmental terms and conditions will be issued for handling, storing and transporting the fuel. The project owner is responsible for ensuring that all environmental standards are adhered to, and the project owner is held accountable for any environmental damage resulting from non-compliance with these conditions.

Required information:

  • Specific description of amount and type of fuel
  • Which units it is stored in
  • How many units
  • Exact locations, both description and indication on maps
  • How the fuel will be transported to the area (means of transport, fuel containers)
  • Who/which provider is responsible for the fuel at each site
  • Planned precautions with regards to minimizing risks of spill or other pollution – both when the sites are manned and unmanned
  • The time frame for storing the fuel on those locations, with start and end dates indicated
  • Description of how unused fuel and empty fuel containers will be removed at the end of the project and how it will be transported

Environmental conditions will then be issued for handling, storing and transporting the fuel.

Compliance with the environmental conditions and requirements stated in expedition (and National Park) permits must be documented:

  • fuel depot sites must be photographed before installing the fuel;
  • the fuel depot itself must be photographed when installed at the start of the project;
  • fuel depot sites must be photographed after removal and clean-up when finishing the projects.

This documentation will also be necessary for fulfilling the terms for the area allotments.
