Radio permit and satellite communications

Please note that all expeditions are required to bring a PLB, Maritime VHF and Satellite telephone.
In case the expedition will split up into several groups, all sub-groups will need to be equipped with PLB, VHF and Satellite phone.

Please include a radio permit in your application. The radio permit must be issued to a person participating in the expedition activity. Radio permits are issued by the Radio Administration: https://www.aqutsisut.gl/en

Tusass has a concession for satellite communication in Greenland. Therefore, it is illegal in Greenland to use equipment for satellite communication outside of Tusass. This means that expeditions must purchase satellite telephony through Tusass.

However, equipment for specific emergency and safety communication, such as PLBs, is exempt. (as of January 1, 2025)

Receivers for internet communication (such as Starlink and OneWeb receivers) are not exempt. They may therefore only be used if the subscription is obtained through Tusass.

These rules apply to all of Greenland with the exception of Pituffik Space Base.
