CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement aiming to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten the survival of the species.
Therefore, tourists are not allowed to export certain CITES listed species including fin whale, bowhead whale, sperm whale, humpback whale, minke whale from East Greenland, narwhal, beluga whale, killer whale, pilot whale, porpoise, polar bear and all prey birds from Greenland.
Walrus and minke whale from West Greenland can be exported by tourists if a valid CITES export permit is obtained.
Products of sheep, musk ox, reindeer and seal can be exported without a CITES export permit.
