Research Stations (D)

Research / scientific purposes and activities

  • Research / scientific expeditions must be affiliated with a responsible institution.
  • A research / scientific institution endorsement must be submitted as part of the expedition permit application.
  • The holder of the expedition permit must be (a representative of) the research institution.
  • A scientific expedition or research station permit can only be used for research / scientific purposes and activities. If other types of activities are conducted by other members of an expedition, they will need to apply for their own expedition permit, covering their activities (e.g. tourist purposes such as cruise, adventure, etc.).

Research station permits and ‘sub-permits’

  • The holder of the Research Station expedition permit is responsible for all activities carried out under that permit.
  • The expedition leader is responsible for ensuring that all expedition members are familiar with all relevant rules in the area covered by the expedition.
  • An overall expedition permit for research stations only covers operation of the station and applies to the station area (immediate vicinity of the station), the individual persons specified in the permit, and the research activities taking place within the station area. Some activities may be located so far from the station that they must have their own expedition permit, i.e. a Scientific expedition permit (C).

Sub-permits, which are an administrative practice, can be used for the (research-related) activities that take place at and near the station. For these activities/sub-projects, it may be necessary to obtain additional permits from the authorities – either as a supplement to the station's permit, or as an independent expedition permit with associated conditions and supplementary permits. For example, some scientific activities may be located so far from the station that they must have their own expedition permit, i.e. a Scientific expedition permit (C).

A Research Station is responsible for the sub-projects taking place under the Research Station's expedition permit, regardless of who will carry them out. This includes all activities conducted by the sub-projects, e.g., fuel deployment and flights.

Research stations may have their own, internal application processes for the projects hosted at the station. It is important to emphasize that such internal applications managed by the stations are not the same as an Expedition Permit application.

The Expedition Office can only process an application based on the information the applicant submits regarding the underlying projects and can only regulate to the extent that it is relevant based on the information supplied. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide all necessary information and apply for any additional permits based on planned activities.
