Naalakkersuisut (the Government of Greenland) has issued an official travel advisory urging extreme caution in Dickson Fjord west of Ella Island, and throughout the National Park in North and East Greenland.
This advisory follows recommendations from the Emergency Preparedness Commission after a landslide-triggered tsunami on September 16, 2023, which caused nine days of violent wave activity and significant damage.
Due to ongoing safety concerns, Naalakkersuisut considers the entire National Park a high-risk area. Travelers and expedition teams must be aware of key hazards, including sudden weather changes and long response times for rescue operations.
Authorities are currently clarifying implications for the upcoming expedition season, including whether restrictions on sailing in Dickson Fjord will be introduced.
